Saturdays Are Not Only For The Boys

Seeing as this is a craft beer blog, what I am about to say may not sit well with a lot of people, but I will not deny the truth – I love Bud Light. I will, in no way, compare its quality to that of a carefully crafted IPA or well thought porter, but it does have its time and place. The simple flavor profile, lower alcohol volume, lighter feel, lesser calories, and cheaper price all contribute to its worth. Sometimes, a Bud Light just hits the spot. Sometimes, all I’m looking for is an easy beer to sip while I clean or something cheap to buy in bulk. Sometimes I’m at a dive bar and I’m not looking to give one of their 3-5 craft options a try or unnecessarily spend more money. Honestly, sometimes I’m just in the mood for it.

When I used to wait tables, I fake-laughed at many costumers’ jokes, but I will never forget the joke that actually cracked me up. I was delivering two stouts to one table, but had two Bud Lights on my tray to drop off at another.  I handed the first couple their craft beers and the man looks at me and says, “Oh, that’s so nice of you to bring us a couple waters as well.” He was referring to the Bud Lights. He, his wife, and myself all had a good chuckle. I will always appreciate those kinds of jokes as this beer is, what some may say, “watered down.” However, I would never actually hate on it.

While I do identify myself as a “beer snob,” I know when to turn that mode off and when to enjoy the crisp simplicity of a cold Bud Light. And this refers to all widely distributed domestic beers. I personally am brand loyal to Anheuser-Busch products but I appreciate those who choose MillerCoors. I find it frustrating when other “beer snobs” do nothing but rip apart these beers. Yes, they are far less creative than microbrewed styles and yes, I understand that supporting a company like Anheuser-Busch over a local craft brewery is comparable to supporting Walmart over local farmers. I know there are many complicated thoughts and issues surrounding both. But the truth is, sometimes the weekend hits and I just want to pop open a couple cold ones and chill…because beer is not only for snobs and Saturdays are not only for the boys.
